Summary for Senior RF & Electromagnetic Engineer

At Optisys this senior engineer will be working with the latest technology everyday. Some people call it magic.

We are looking for an antenna designer who designs antenna components with waveguide technology.

We prefer an expertise in HFSS with recent experience OR an expertise in CST with HFSS experience.

This role is for an individual who is open to additional learning and would relish the opportunity to immerse themselves in both project work and deeper RF theory to support our extensive IRAD activities.

This is a new role, due to the exponential increase in design work, specifically in electromagnetic antenna design. The successful candidate will directly report to the CTO, Michael Hollenbeck.

The preference is for this role is to work at the Optisys HQ in Salt Lake, to support the day to day running of projects and production, however, part/full time remote working would be considered.

This role is an opportunity to work on the leading edge of metal 3D printed antennas, which are a novel class of antennas that allow for pushing the limits of what physics allows in antenna design. Optisys antennas can be found all around the world and out of this world in space. This position requires creativity and exploration of difficult design challenges to solve problems that have not been encountered before.

Duties and Responsibilities

Design antenna components and systems to customer requirements on a variety of platforms and environments.

Work primarily in ANSYS HFSS to design, model, and optimize highly integrated antenna assemblies all the way from single components up through multi-thousand component assemblies.

Work closely with Mechanical and Additive Manufacturing engineers to understand the rules for design using Optisys’ proprietary fabrication techniques.

Interact directly with customers to provide updates on program status and reviews.

Be able to independently solve challenging problems that do not have easy answers.

Create novel structures and designs that provide unique RF function.

Requirements

Current US Citizenship or Current Green Card Holder

Antenna designer who designs antenna components with waveguide technology

Demonstrated expertise in HFSS

Demonstrated expertise in CST with HFSS experience

Minimum 5 years of experience

MS or Ph.D in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on electromagnetics/RF/Antennas

BS in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on electromagnetics/RF/Antennas with additional design experience and demonstrated success in waveguide antenna design (i.e. patents or published papers)

Demonstrated mastery of Ansys HFSS with complex parametric models

Expertise in 3D modelling software (HFSS, CST, etc)

Demonstrated familiarity with Vector Network Analyzer calibration and measurement

Solid understanding of S-parameters

Demonstrated proficiency in more than one area of antenna design (arrays, horns, combiner networks, couplers, monopulse, filters, etc)

Demonstrated hands on trouble shooting of delicate equipment

Comparison of test results with specifications

Data analysis and presentation

Familiarity with design and analysis of RF components, including many of the following:

– Waveguide (rectangular, circular, ridged, coaxial etc)
– Understanding of waveguide modes
– Polarizers
– Circulators
– Switches
– RF PCB design

Desired Experience

Familiarity with spectrum analyzers, function generators, oscilloscopes, DMM, etc…

Familiarity with coax connectors such as:  SMA, SMB, 2.92 mm, 2.4mm, GPO, TNC, Type-N, etc…

Familiarity with antenna ranges and pattern testing (farfield, nearfield, compact, etc)

Familiarity with analysis software – Python, VB, MatLab, etc…

Geographic Location Requirements

This role prefers that you are working at the OPTISYS Salt Lake offices. A relocation package is available. However, remote would be considered.

OPTISYS Culture

Optisys is a close-knit team of highly motivated individuals who all share the same aspirations of ensuring Optisys becomes a global power in RF technology.

We thrive on a culture of ingenuity, passion, and collaboration, and due to the nature of the product we develop you will be interfacing with all levels of the company regularly.

Top Priorities During the First 6 Months:

Develop and implement an outline for proficiency at designing to specification in at least one antenna family at Optisys (passive arrays, active arrays, feeds, filter assemblies, etc)

Develop and implement an outline to learn the rules surrounding design for additive manufacturing at Optisys

Develop and define the steps needed for your to be an independent problem solver for assigned design work

Successfully complete at least one program design that meets the requirements of the program

Develop and  implement an outline for you to integrate with the team and company culture

Compensation

The target compensation is a combination of a base salary plus a performance bonus based upon company performance and employee performance.

Breakdown of Compensation:
The annual On-Target base salary range is between $125K-$200K.
There is an annual performance bonus.
There is an employee phantom stock option program.
The pay cycle is every other week.
